 Historic Sites & Museums in Charlotte

Charlotte has tons of great museums and historic sites for you to visit while you are here.  Take a trip back in time at the Charlotte Museums of history or learn about the history of transportation at the North Carolina Transportation Museum.  Check out Discovery Place which provides ever-changing, entertainment facilities that range from life science to space exploration.  We have highlighted some of Charlotte's great places to visit below.
Historic Sites & Museums
Discovery Place - provides ever-changing, entertaining facilities that foster experiences in areas that range from life science to space exploration. More than a half-million people from all over the United States visit Discovery Place, its IMAX Dome Theatre and its planetarium each year. The Nature Museum, a Queen City tradition for more than 50 years, provides a place to explore nature at its unique location near Freedom Park. The Museum of Coastal Carolina is the Carolina coastal area's premiere natural history museum. 
The Museum of York County - The Museum features interdisciplinary programs and exhibitions based on art, anthropology, history, and natural history collections. Permanent exhibitions include the Stans African Halls, one of the nation's most comprehensive exhibitions of African animals in natural habitat dioramas, complemented by African cultural artifacts. Biltmore Estate - More than a century ago, George Vanderbilt created a larger-than-life country retreat in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Its centerpiece— Biltmore House—provided 250 rooms of hospitality to family and friends. Today, Biltmore Estate continues to offer a gracious escape from everyday life. Marvel at the grandeur of America’s largest home filled with Vanderbilt’s collection of fine art and antiques. Stroll through gardens created by America’s father of landscape architecture, Frederick Law Olmsted. Enjoy estate-raised foods, and savor award-winning vintages at Biltmore’s winery.  (800) 624-1575
Reynolda House, Museum of American Art - Enjoy masterpieces of American art displayed in the gracious American country home built in 1912-17 by Katharine Smith and Richard Joshua Reynolds, founder of the tobacco manufacturing company. The comfortable setting with original furnishings provides a relaxed atmosphere enjoyed by thousands of visitors each year. Accredited by the American Association of Museums, it features special exhibitions and education programs attracting national attention. Named to the National Register of Historic Places, Reynolda House represents a vanished life style. Once the center of a thousand-acre estate, the historic house museum is now enhanced by restored formal gardens and shops and restaurants that occupy its former farm buildings and cottages. North Carolina Transportation Museum - The North Carolina Transportation Museum interprets inland transportation from the 1800's to the present day. Tour the buildings and grounds that once were Southern Railroad's largest repair facility. Train rides daily, April 1-Labor Day, Sat. & Sun. through mid Dec. Museum of the New South - Charlotte's only regional history museum focusing on the New South period. An interactive regional history museum currently featuring changing and traveling exhibits that offer a real and poignant view of Charlotte's past. People of all ages will find the hands-on history educational and entertaining. It is the only museum in the country concentrating exclusively on New South history.  (704) 333-1887
Charlotte Museum of History - This newly expanded museum, which showcases the story of the region's history from the 1700's to the 20th century, serves as the gateway to the Hezekiah Alexander Homesite, which is the oldest home in Mecklenburg County.  This beautiful new research and educational center is available for meetings, receptions and private gatherings.
